Here is a variation of the question I posed in Surprise Bonus Post: What is the relationship between the artist's work and their life?
And while I have your attention: Do you think the above image is art?
If you determine that there is a relationship between the artist's work and their life and you think the above image is art, tell me about my life.
This image is possibly the silliest image I have ever received.
Christine Valters Paintner writes, "taking" photos with the head is often an act of analysis or grasping......"receiving" photos with the heart is an experience of grace.**
Are you practical and wrestling with the question: What is art for anyway? Send me all your ideas, positive or negative (and your silliest image).
Thanks for exploring the mystery - Nicky Mendenhall
*My midweek dream: After hearing kittens meowing in my silk purse for several days, I decide to investigate. As soon as the purse is open, an elegant full grown purple cat makes her way across the room. (I'm open to dream analysis should any of you feel so moved.)
**Gratitude to Christine Valters Paintner and her book, Eyes of the Heart, for these ideas.
Regarding the question about a person's life being connected to her/his art, I would say that it is. Aren't we all products of our life experiences? And if we try to convey art, writing, descriptions, etc. without respecting those experiences, are we being true to our authentic selves?
ReplyDeleteI don't have the photo accessible to me right now, but one of my silliest is from the Iowa State Fair this past summer (no...it's not a people-watching photo!) It's a table in the Ag Building displayed with a large array of entries in the nut division. Plates and plates of nuts in the shells. And a hand-written sign on a pedestal right in the middle of the table saying "PLEASE DO NOT EAT THE NUTS!" Because I was considering that.... haha!
As for your dream about the purple cat: Nicky, I have whacky, bizarre dreams every single night! :) Sometimes I try to interpret them and sometimes I just chalk it up to brain overload in the night. However, I used to have a friend who did dream interpretation. I sat in on some of her sessions. The most important thing I learned from her was that every dreamer has her/his own interpretation of everything in the dream. For example, one cannot say a tree stands for something in particular. The question is: what does the tree represent to the DREAMER? I watched her take apart people's dreams item by item and feeling by feeling asking them for their own interpretations of those things. And it was amazing how the dreamers discovered what their subconscious was saying to them. You could just see the amazement on their faces when they figured it out. Good luck with your purple cat! :)
I think you make a good point inf the first paragraph. Stay tuned for more ideas about this issue.
DeleteYour photo sounds hilarious! Thanks for sharing.
Also thanks for your input on dreams - perhaps it will become clear to me what the purple cat is offering me!
